Peter Weiss

“One of the best guides we have seen anywhere in the world.” ~Toronto Sun

With a varied academic background in fine art, anthropology, political science and geography, Peter Weiss has been leading in-depth tours around the world for 25 years. An experienced guide and lecturer on a wide variety of subjects, Peter is a popular study leader and traveling companion, having worked with an unusually diverse range of clients, from university alumni groups to museum and cultural institutions, corporations to primary schools, Native American tribes to foreign consulates.

Based in Santa Fe for the past 34 years, he has developed a deep knowledge of the history and culture of the region, leading tours and lecturing extensively throughout the American Southwest.

In addition, since 1997 he has expanded his range, leading tours in the Caribbean, the Arctic, Japan, Thailand, North Africa, West Africa, and throughout Europe, Turkey, and the Black Sea. Peter has written about some of his travels as well as on the subject of tourism and has been a consultant to destinations seeking to develop and manage cultural tourism resources.

Peter is also an active illustrator and photographer. In addition to shooting travel and editorial assignments, he has a Diploma in Sculpture from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and has shown his work in galleries sporadically over the years. His most recent exhibition was of the elaborate hand-drawn travel journals he has made over the last fifteen years. He occasionally teaches photography and drawing workshops and has published one book of photographs.

For the last few years his major preoccupation has been with the way indigenous peoples are adapting to modern life, either through emigration to new environments, or by adapting new technologies to their traditional life ways. Documenting this subject has taken him as far as India and West Africa. A more recent project involves new and creative forms of mapping subjectively designed journeys, a field sometimes referred to as psycho geography.
