Opera Festival Santa Fe – August 1-9, 2015

santafeopera

Are you ready for high culture in the high desert?

This August, lucky members of the Opera League will fly away with me to Santa Fe for their annual opera festival. On the menu will be operas by Donizetti, Verdi, Strauss and Mozart.

That’s not all. This year’s fest will include the world premier of Cold Mountain, composed by the Pulitzer Prize-winning Jennifer Higdon and based on the novel of Charles Frazier.

When we’re not lapping up operas, our group will take sightseeing tours of the amazing city that is Santa Fe. We’ll also get a backstage tour of the the festival’s incomparable outdoor venue.

A special tour just for us to the Shidoni Sculpture gardens where we’ll get to see a molten bronze pouring demonstration. If you never thought you’d see molten bronze up close and personal, you spoke too soon.

Opera League of Los Angeles – Pilot Program – Don Giovanni in San Diego – Sunday, February 22, 2015

As in previous years and due to the great demand, the Opera League is once again gearing up for a trek to San Diego.

This time the opera will be Don Giovanni. Check out the cast: Ildebrando D’Arcangelo in the title role, a role he sang earlier this year at the Salzburg Festival; singing Leporello will be Alex Esposito who, like D’Arcangelo, is making his San Diego debut; first-time artists Myrtò Papatanasiu as Donna Elvira and Paul Appelby as Don Ottavio.

The price for this one-day trip includes a ticket to the opera, bus fare and tip, snacks on the bus, a three-course lunch at the famous Westgate Hotel including tip and a glass of wine, an intermission reception, and a $25 donation to the Opera League.

There are two categories of opera tickets: Cat I – Balcony – $345 or Cat II – Orchestra – $395 (all inclusive).

Reservations should be mailed to Brita Millard, PO Box 492330, Los Angeles, CA 90049. Please make out your check to: Opera League of Los Angeles – Pilot Program.

We are looking forward to you joining us for a fun day.

You probably don’t need a summary of this world-renowned magnum opus, but just in case…

Pompous, lustful and masochistic, Don Giovanni is the ultimate bad boy, but is he more? This intense opera stuns as Giovanni stalks his latest conquest, a beautiful young bride. But he cannot escape his past sins – the daughter of the nobleman who he brutally murdered and a woman he carelessly left at the altar – or the ones who try valiantly to bring him to justice. In a shocking conclusion, we find out that the living are not the only ones who can seek vengeance.

Since three years the Opera League of Los Angeles organizes trips for their members and guests to the San Diego Opera, to attend Opera productions not scheduled at the Los Angeles Opera.  Middle of March we attended “A Masked Ball” with a production of 150 performers on stage and what a cast there was: Piotr Beczala, the world famous lyric tenor, Bulgarian soprano Krassimira Stoyanova, and Stephanie Blythe. So it was no wonder that this Opera League fundraiser event sold out very quickly.
